Going on a paddlesport adventure for the first time is intimidating. However, knowing a few tips and tricks helps put those initiate fears at ease. It is always better to be over-prepared. Here are eight kayaking tips every beginner should think about.
1.) Have someone assist you into in the kayak
Having someone assist you can help ensure that you donβt flip the kayak the first time getting in and that your seat is properly adjusted to your height. There should always be three points of contact between you and your paddle craft. Stay low while entering and existing to help you from losing your balance.
2.) Make sure to wear a life jacket, or have one with you
Even if you are a good swimmer, all water vessels are required by law to have at least one wearable life jacket per person on board. Before heading out make sure you have it with you and easily accessible in case something were to happen.
3.) Don't overload your boat
Sinking you paddle craft is not a great way to start a boating adventure. Only bring your essentials with you. If you do need to bring additional items along with you be sure to equally distribute the weight in both the front and back.
4.) Be ready for the weather
Bring water, sunscreen, and proper clothing for the weather. Without water you can suffer from heat exhaustion , heat cramps, and dehydration. Staying prepared for the weather helps in avoiding dangerous circumstances. Check to If you hear thunder or there are any predicted storms before you leave for your trip.
5.) Don't let your arms do all the work
An important kayaking tip is getting the paddle motion down correctly. The paddle motion should be using your core along with your arms and shoulders. Overextending and overusing your arms can lead to injuries.
6.) Know the whistle distress signals in case of emergency
When going on an outdoor adventure expect the unexpected. Though I hope you never have to use them, brushing up on the distress signals is good to know before going on any trip.
- One short blast tells other boaters, βI intend to pass you on my port (left) side.β
- Two short blasts tell other boaters, βI intend to pass you on my starboard (right) side.β
- Three short blasts tell other boaters, βI am operating astern propulsion.β For some vessels, this tells other boaters, βI am backing up.β
7.) Waterproof gear
Wearing water proof gear is essential during colder months. When the weather is warm, wearing my bathing suit is always a good move. The most important aspect of wearing waterproof gear is ensuring your technology are safe and dry if your boat were too flip. Put all of your tech gear in a dry bag or a ziplock bag.
